Bison,
once one of the most abundant large mammals
in the world and luckily saved from extinction, now
are considered a viable investment for commercial livestock production.
As native ruminants,
bison are highly adapted to the prairie's
climate and plant communities so pasture
management programs are based on modern grazing practices
developed for beef that are raised on the prairie
landscape. Still, to optimize the growth and production capabilities of your herd this
natural prairie food
supply must be augmented by grain rations - a balanced nutritious diet
that including mineral and vitamins supplements.
Your concerns about a feeding
program are likely centered on helping your animals cycle through
the summer grazing period when the energy demands of lactating females
and breeding bulls are higher, and through the winter months when
the bison metabolism slows down.
It is essential to plan a proper
feeding program that takes into account the seasons, the condition of
your pasture, the quantity / variety / quality / energy levels of your
forage, the quality of your water supply, any stress your animals may be
under, and the stage of production your bison are at. Feeding
rations for weaned heifer calves
will be significantly different than that of the feeder
bull or breeding bull. The sudden introduction of high
levels of cereal grains to feeder bulls can result in rumen overload and
even death. Bulls selected for breeding that are given excessive
energy supplementation can suffer from foot and liver problems and
diminished breeding performance as well as shorter breeding lifespan.
Replacement heifers need to reach their ideal body weight over a period
of two years to have a better rate of conception.
Providing a more balanced and
nutritious diet results in a healthier herd that is much easier to
maintain.
